I find myself drawn to novels with characters that have a voice that permeates the novel. The Help was one of those for me.Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05130733681254163610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377741836634273944.post-65147483993145959752013-01-30T17:57:46.736-08:002013-01-30T17:57:46.736-08:00Yes... that is her character. So, the million dollar question... can a person write a character beyond their character? :)Karlene Petitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17910702587514001827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377741836634273944.post-21451989034771276432013-01-30T12:38:26.354-08:002013-01-30T12:38:26.354-08:00It is, isn't it, Karlene? I've read Evanovich, and agree, although I might think of it in terms of the feel of the book being consistent with Stephanie Plum's character, so it all comes together as one.Linda Grayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00464543671077860561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377741836634273944.post-65713540797500209592013-01-30T12:35:58.512-08:002013-01-30T12:35:58.512-08:00Great discussion point, Em! Great authors do usually seem to have a consistency in their way of writing with all their books, and I know that one of the things that attracts me to particular authors is the way they form sentences, so that fits with your idea. I've heard it used by academics and readers as the voice of the novel, and by well-published workshop leaders as something to be avoided at all costs (although the term is usually "authorial" voice. I guess that's the diff.:) ) Linda Grayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00464543671077860561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377741836634273944.post-2209714438379329892013-01-28T09:56:06.384-08:002013-01-28T09:56:06.384-08:00I am so sorry I missed Susan's talk. And the two concepts, characters and big picture, ultimately create the essence of the book.I'll use the Janet Evanovich novels for an example. Janet has created a unique voice for her characters. Plum is different, and she's fun. But the books themselves have a voice that's unique, too. Read the first chapter, and we have the feel of this book. It's light, fun and humorous... we feel the mood of the book.<br />This is a great subject! I though 'voice' was more an authors way of writing, no matter what the story.Karen Baldwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01522178275164058849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377741836634273944.post-562870830050966142013-01-28T04:35:35.120-08:002013-01-28T04:35:35.120-08:00I think there are two voices. All good books have a good voice, at least of the main character. For me, voice is really hard to get a really good handle on.Natalie Aguirrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03756087804171246660noreply@blogger.com
